Hidden among the trees next to the Lagoa, the rough-hewn benches of Palaphita Kitch make this a cosy looking place. This bar/restaurant is all about location – the bar is just a stone’s throw from the calm waters of the Lagoa and looking further afield, you can see some of Rio’s most spectacular monoliths – Dois Irmãos, Pedra da Gávea and Pedra Bonita.

I have found the food to be a bit hit and miss and certainly overpriced, but there are some killer cocktails (don’t miss the Caipira Nativas – caipirinhas made with great native fruits such as jabuticaba, cupuaçú and umbu). Arrive in plenty of time for sunset, make yourself comfortable with a drink and enjoy this unique location. When the light starts to fail, the waiters go round and light flares to add a little extra magic.

Pros: Seriously beautiful location, interesting menu, great cocktails.

Cons: A little overpriced. Food can be a bit meh.

Expensive: 3.5/5
