If you happened to spend more than 30 seconds chatting to a Carioca about bolinhos de bacalhau, chances are that pretty soon Pavão Azul would get a mention. That is because it is widely accepted that this simple bar in Copacabana serves up the best example of these delicious, creamy salt-cod balls in town*. If you want to get away from tourist traps and knock back some ice-cold beers with the locals, this is the place. The pastel de camarão and the shrimp rice are also higlights. Seeing as how busy these guys always are, the service is friendly and efficient.

*However, on a recent tasting Nova Capela made a good case for taking the title – why not try both and see what you think?

Pros: The best Bolinhos de Bacalhau in town, great service, mix with the locals, cheap.

Cons: Almost always busy so expect to wait at least 20 mins for a table – make sure you tell the waiter you want a table!

Expensive: 2/5
