Situated in the heart of Santa Teresa, Rio’s most bohemian and beautiful neighbourhood, Térèze is seriously luxurious. It is attached to the equally fancy Santa Teresa Hotel and you should know from the outset that the wonderful view, attentive service and innovative menu, all come at a price! So unless you are super-rich, this is a special occasion kind of place.

Having got that out of the way, let’s talk food and drink! The menu is filled with luxury ingredients – lobster, caviar, truffle oil – if you can’t find something that sounds amazing then you should probably not be eating here! Highlights for me were the creamy slab of Burrata, the Lobster Moqueca and the Leitão Rapadura (suckling pig with caramelised vanilla and glazed baby scallions – drool!). I’ve only been twice (once was for our 1st anniversary) but both times the food has been very good.

One thing I would say about a place like this is that the prices act as a clientèle filter. Expect your fellow diners to be a mix of rich business men and women, rich expats and holiday makers and some rich, older locals. That’s a bit of a generalisation of course, but hopefully it gives you an idea of the atmosphere.

If you like the sound of Térèze but need to be careful with your money, there are a couple of options. Firstly, you could just go for drinks – there is a really nice bar with four-poster style couches and the cocktails and snacks are very good. Another option is to go for lunch on a weekday (Monday to Friday) – currently they are offering 3 courses for R$85 which seems like a great deal! Don’t forget to have a wander round and check out the swimming pool on the roof!

Pros: Delicious food made from luxurious ingredients. Good wine list.

Cons: Expensive and therefore not exactly a mixed crowd.
