I should start off by saying I love Spanish food – it is one of my favourites. London boasts some great Spanish restaurants and until I discovered Venga I found myself missing this wonderful cuisine here in Rio. I approached Venga with some trepidation – I love good Spanish food, but when it goes wrong it can be revolting.

Happily I had a great surprise – the menu is full of classics (Jamón Ibérico, Patatas bravas, Gambas al Ajillo, Tortilla, etc) and I’m delighted to say that they’re all really good. On top of that there are some really interesting twists that you might not see on every tapas menu – the Chocolate con aceite y sal (Chocolate with olive oil and salt) is ridiculously good – see photo below.

Wine is always expensive in Brazil and it is not different here at Venga – they have a great list, but if you’re watching your spending then the sangria is really good (lots of fruit, not too sweet).

Pros: Amazing tapas, wonderful Spanish jamon, excellent wines and a great sangria!

Cons: Food and wine this good is expensive – especially in Ipanema/Leblon. Busy on weekends.
