Back in 2013 we started Rio’s first ever culinary tours. We’ve been working hard ever since to give our guests (5,000+ and counting!) the best experience possible. We won TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 – 5 years in a row means we are now in the TripAdvisor Hall of Fame. I am going to struggle to get into words how amazing this tour is. I would forget about every other tour and book this first. It is a must do as soon as you get to Rio. Tom showed us around the food market and restaurants, explained the history, process of the food and drinks we tried and bought everything. I felt completely safe on his tour which helped me feel much more comfortable in Rio walking around.
We loved it so much the next day, we found another food market and walked around feeling very confident of buying different things just like I lived there. I cannot thank Tom for an amazing day, which weeks later we still talk about. AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING!
What a fantastic day!! Not only was the tour laden with loads of tasty treats, it was also delivered with a great deal of passion, insight and a good dose of humour! Tom (our guide) has a genuine love for Brazilian food and culture and I would highly recommend this tour to anyone new to Brazilian cuisine. The tour was not just restricted to Carioca food but we were also able to try dishes, fruits etc from other regions giving us an even broader experience of Brazilian flavours. To top all this off, Tom even supplied us with a number of great tips, recipes and other things to do for our ongoing trip. Tom is a vivacious and enthusiastic guide full of funny stories and interesting anecdotes so please…do not miss a chance to enjoy this tour, it’s an absolute MUST for your stay in Rio!
I loved this tour especially since I have lived here already for one year and Tom still managed to introduce things in his tour I had never experienced before! Tom is easy, fun, knowledgeable not only with food but things locals know! Food is a wonderful way to understand culture, customs, and even language! … I highly recommend it! It was a pleasure meeting you Tom, good luck with the next rush for the Olympics, I think it would be much more effective way to learn about Brazil then the local museums!
Tom and Angela are great – very helpful and extremely interesting. The food tour is a gentle walk through some charming Rio neighbourhoods. I have mobility issues but even I was able to manage the walk. The foods sampled cover the spectrum of Brazilian food and drinks, from the south to the north as well as deep into the Amazon. For me, this is something you must do.
Tom’s tour was excellent, the food was so so tasty, well worth it. The group was small and we all got to know each other quite well which was lovely. Tom is full of great tips, and shares lots of fun and interesting facts. We really felt we spent a day where we got to experience the true Rio. Thank you so much Tom, we will cherish memories of today for a long long time!
Tours of this nature either sink or float based on the strength of the guides. Tom was exceptionally knowledgeable, not only about the food we were eating (its history, its origins, its preparation) but also knowledgeable about the Carioca culture and the neighborhoods that we wondered. Every food sampling, every restaurant, every piece of street art had a story to go with it that created a tour in which eating interesting and tasty food was merely a bonus. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Rio.
My husband and I definitely recommend this tour! Tom provided a fantastic and tasty food tour around hidden Rio treasures we wouldn’t have found on our own! Tom is incredibly knowledgeable and provides a fun perspective on food and culture in Rio. … The small group setting and Tom’s taste in stops make this a must-do during your stay. Even after the tour, Tom made some great recommendations for the rest of our stay that turned out wonderfully as well!
We did this food tour early in our trip and it helped us navigate the city, learn what to order for the rest of our visit, and gave us a different perspective of Rio. Tom was fantastic. He replied promptly to emails before we booked and offered suggestions of things to do and where to eat after the tour. We loved going through the market and sampling the fresh fruit, tasting foods from different areas of Brazil and meeting new travelers. We definitely recommend this to anyone visiting Rio.
The Eat Rio walking tour was amazing! In fact, it was my husband’s favorite part of our two week trip to Brazil. Tom focuses on food, but tells you about the city and culture as well. Each stop is at your groups pace and the whole thing times out to just a really lovely afternoon. This is a “do not miss!” in my opinion.
What an amazing introduction to Rio. Tom had us tasting all kinds of foods including street snacks that we could then identify later on our own opening us to a world of culinary delights that we may have been too afraid to try. … I’ve been on food tours around the world and this was the best one I’ve ever been on.
This is one of the best food tours I’ve ever done in one of the most amazing cities! Tom’s passion for Rio, Brazil and food is totally apparent from the moment you meet him. It’s a food and walking tour all rolled into one! From experiencing a bustling Rio market, tasting tapiocas and all of the varieties of fresh fruit suco, to trying amazing mangos, not to mention the BEST coconut candy EVER, to ending with fresh strawberry caipirinhas-it was perfect. Thanks again Tom, for an amazing day and tour! Can’t wait to come back!
Don’t miss the chance to do this tour. It starts in a restaurant in Lapa, works through a food market, street food, juice bar, subway trip, Amazonian food and beer, and finishes in a fun dinner party. If you want to see the downtown sites, learn a lot about Brazilian food and drink, and have lots of fun/ meet new friends this tour is a must.
Whether you are a huge foodie, or just want to taste some Brazilian staples, this tour is for you! I am a foodie with a thousand questions about how the food came to be, where it is from, history, etc… My wife couldn’t care less about the history of a food – she just wants to eat it. We both walked away from this tour loving it! Tom knows exactly what he is doing and has structured the perfect day tour of the foods in Rio!
Believe the hype, this tour is fantastic! We were taken around by Angela, who’s knowledge of the city & food was second to none! Everything we ate was beautifully made and the experience unforgettable. The follow up email after the tour was superb as well with Tom and Angela recommending a range of fantastic Rio activities. Can’t recommend this enough, a must do for a lover of food!
My husband, my parents and I all enjoyed the tour for different reasons, but the main one was that it was so much fun! We tried foods we would never have known to try, met other interesting people, and enjoyed wandering around areas of Rio that we wouldn’t have otherwise.
Tom was fun and knowledgeable about all of the food we tried. Almost everything I ate was something I had never tried before. Tom is informative, yet relaxed and very fun. I spent the whole day with the group. You meet interesting people who love food. I would take the tour again in a heartbeat.
This tour was fantastic! If you do only one thing in Rio, please do this. We had a thoroughly enjoyable time and were entertained by our guide Tom. His food knowledge of Rio was great, and his historical anecdotes and cultural knowledge of the city kept us all enthralled for the whole tour. And of course, the food was amazing! Easily the best and most enjoyable tour I have ever taken. Don’t miss it!! Bill and Kayoko (USA and Japan)
My husband and I were attending Brazil for the first time from the States. We are big foodies and love being adventurous with food, but the thing was I was 4 months pregnant. Tom was so accommodating and sent me all the ingredients to all the food we would be trying during the tour so I could do research beforehand. I was so touched that he took the trouble to do that. I definitely want to go back on a tour with Tom now that I can enjoy a caipirinha and introduce him to our little one.
