Looking up
I’m feeling a bit wistful at the moment – perhaps some saudade even. It’s because we have reluctantly made the decision to leave our lovely big apartment in Santa Teresa and move a bit closer to my work. A young couple came to look round this morning and they loved it – the looks on their faces said it all: “You guys are mad to be leaving this place”. Maybe they’re right. It’s just that it takes between 1.5 and 2 hours to get to my place of work. And when you spend 4 hours sitting on a bus each day, you don’t have much time left for anything else.
We will probably end up in a much smaller apartment and it almost certainly won’t have the roof terrace and amazing views we currently enjoy. This morning I woke up with a bit of a heavy head , wandered outside and looked up:
Here are a few more of the highlights from our 14 months of living on top of the hill:
Even oil rigs can look pretty! I spotted this funny looking cloud coming up over the horizon early one morning.
Having a great view like this gives you a completely different take on the weather. As this storm rolled in over Guanabara Bay, you could just make out a rainbow over to the left.
And then there were the sunsets – this is our amazing view of Pão de Açucar, taken on Christmas Eve.
I love me some nice clouds. In fact I should probably join the Cloud Appreciation Society.
Hey ho (or as a Brazilian would say [sighing] Ai, ai…) – I’m sure there will be other sunsets wherever we end up. And I should remember that exploring a new neighbourhood is going to be fun!
Wow Tom, love your pictures, and the views are beyond memorable.
I am sure you will build a great new life and find awesome new things to appreciate in your new corner of the world… ;)

Ah, thanks Ray! We made the decision a week or two ago, but it wasn’t until people started coming to look round that it felt real. But cutting down my commute is going to be awesome! New adventures await! :D
Shame, the Santa Teresa place seems cozy, and the neighborhood nice as well. You overlooked a major issue in the post though: is there room for the herb garden in the new place.
Good point Gritty – I’ll use that as a filtering criterion when we’re looking at new apartments. No herbs = no move! ;)
I’m kind of pissed your leaving Santa Teresa before I could even get there and take over your apartment. Humph!!
But you’re right, there are other things in this world, other neighborhoods to explore. You’re going to love you’re new neighborhood: Rocinha.
Boa Sorte!
Ha ha! Cheeky! Well if we get our wish then you can come hang out in Copacabana instead! Not a bad fall-back option I think :)
OMG!!! AMAZING photos!!! I absolutely adore the photo of the storm rolling in. Now that’s some serious photography
Thanks Susan – all credit goes to Rio, not me! All I had to do was point the camera ;)
