A Rio Caipirinha
Another post about Caipirinhas? Yeah, what of it?! Just a quick one today as I’ve been working all day would you believe? But as I toiled away, here’s what I was dreaming off:

Is it just me, or does this thing look about a metre tall? A trick of the light or something I suppose – this is in fact just a normal, smallish plastic cup. The drink inside was lovely, regardless of its humble container…
I’ve seen quite a few caipirinha recipes in fancy cocktail books and invariably they call for things like crushed ice and include cautions like “be careful not to bruise the lime when you crush it with your muddler”. Er, run that one by me again? I’ve got to crush it to “release the pungent citrus oils” but be careful not to bruise the poor thing?
Try telling that to the bar men and women of Rio who knock out dozens of these drinks every day. Some of the best caipirinhas in town are served up in a simple plastic cup like this. Perfect for a lazy Saturday afternoon. Or so I’ve been told…

Maybe the warning has something to do with trying not to bruise the skin of the lime so to keep elements of said region from contaminating the caipirinha and taking away from the desired traditional flavor.
Or perhaps this is not the case at all and the person who came up with the warning is just a moron with a drinking problem.

Sorry: I just had to go there again, just can’t seem to help myself :-)
Heh heh – that’s one of the worst kinds of drinking problem I can imagine. Mulled wine must be excruciating, not to mention messy! :)
Hello!
I’m just passing by to say I love your blog! I always tell my students to check it out. As a Portuguese teacher I have to say that I´m happy you started your Portuguese lessons. Annnd you tell me if your friends need Portuguese teachers! =) All the best!
Beijos, Priscila.
Hi Priscila! Thanks for the recommendations :) I’ll do my best to send some students your way!
I had an AMAZING caipirinha a few weeks ago that you would have loved. It was with lime, but also with ginger and molasses! Sounds terrible but it was delicious. It was made with a nicer cachaça from Minas instead of 51, so that made it even smoother.
Ooh yum, doesn’t sound terrible to me! :) I had an acerola and pineapple one last night. It was really good :D
