Photo Post: Crazy flowers
I spotted these crazy flowers when we were in Petrópolis a few weeks ago. To be honest with you I have no idea what they’re called, whether they are indigenous to Brazil or anything else. The flower starts off as a simple, lantern-like pink capsule, but later on this opens up to reveal sections 2 and 3.
I’ve put these second and third sections in expanding panels below so you don’t see all the images at once – just click the panel text to open it up.
Here is the first capsule:

Looks like a fairly simple little thing doesn’t it? A bit like a chinese lantern crossed with a cherry (or something).

Pretty cool right? Can anyone identify these crazy flowers?* Their strangeness makes me think they are from Brazil, but for all I know they could be Australian.
Anyway, that’s it for now – hope you’re all enjoying your weekend!
*Thanks to some excellent detective work from Amanda, we now know the answer. This plant is Abutilon megapotamicum (Chinese Lantern or Trailing abutilon) and it’s native to Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil.

I think I found it! I actually had fun looking for this flower. Try “Abutilon megapotamicum” also known as flor lanterna chinesa :)

It is a native South American flower (most brazilian sites says they are of Brazilian origin)
Wow! I’m really impressed Amanda! That’s definitely the one – awesome work! Thanks :)
Now that someone has already chimed in on the flower post I can participate in the discussion under the guise of a friendly and casual follow up – instead of actual interest in Botany. Anyway, the other day while looking for soccer and rugby results online I stumbled upon this: http://davesgarden.com/members/Monocromatico/
I seems that he is a specialist in the field of Taxonomy (nope, he is not a cab safety inspector for the city – I’ve already asked); but he is from Brazil and has many comments concerning plants native to that country.
Gritty, it’s fine to have an interest in Botany – nothing to be ashamed of! All the cool kids are doing it nowadays. Exhibit A: Yours truly ;)
I’m sure that If I were to arrive in a venue and find Monocromático and you there then that’s where all the hot chicks would be, surrounding ya’lls table and listening in awe (sorry for the use of “ya’ll” as it is not officially recognized and is even overused these days; still there are situations in which it is the most practical term to use)

And since I’ve wondered off topic: Maggie ruled (wish Brazil had a leader of that mindset and stature).
I guess ya’ll is the equivalent of “vocês” right? In Scotland they use a variation of this which is “youse” (pronounced like “use”). example: are youse coming to the fitbaw tonight? (are you [pl] coming to the football tonight?)
p.s. A fan of Maggie Thatcher? I’d never have guessed! ;)
Yes, Maggie was what Dilma considers herself to be – oh the ignorance (the Dilmster probably couldn’t make it past one semester in Oxford).
Btw isn’t it “youse coming to the sohkaw tonight?” .
Remember, I follow Scottish political commentary with great interest so I am familiar with their terms. :-)
