Photo Post: Vhils in Rio

A couple of weeks ago I was getting off the Metro station in Copacabana. I was in a big hurry because I was running late, but just happened to look up for a moment and saw something pretty amazing.

Vhils-Copacabana

This is the work of Portuguese artist Alexadre Farto, AKA Vhils. Apparently his process involves first painting an image onto a wall, then using drills, chisels and other tools to chip away at the painting to leave the final image.

Here’s a close-up:

Nice right? You can see more of his work here.

Hmmmm! I hadn’t recognised it as anyone, but now that you’ve said it you’ve got me thinking. To me it kind of looks like him, but not 100%. Actually I’m really bad at facial recognition, so maybe I should stay out of it ;)

If that’s his attempt at painting Pele, I don’t want to see his other famous people. :)

        Seriously, I don’t think it’s him.

Ha ha! :D Yep, once Mrs Eat Rio threw in some more doubt by saying she thought it was Mussum (I had to look that one up) I did some more searching. I’m pretty sure it isn’t anyone famous – it seems like he just does faces in general rather than famous people.

Haha, Mussum is the best. Too bad tou had to have grown up in Brazil to appreciate him.

Ooh, I thought I’d replied to this. Thanks so much for the link Anna! I really enjoyed reading those peculiarities that I had either forgotten about daily life in London or still take for granted :) I wonder if I could list 60 things I’ve learned about Brazilians, though to be fair I think that ground has been fairly well trodden now…
