Hi everyone. Well, it’s Friday and I’m running very late on about 3 jobs, so I only really have time to quickly tell you about something fun happening in Rio this weekend. Babilônia Feira Hype is a huge market that was first held back in 1996. Back then it was a smaller affair and was held on Aterro da Flamengo. Over the years it has grown, changed and switched locations so that what we have today is more than just a simple market.

The event promised to be more like a mini festival. There will be dozens of stores selling all kinds of cool clothes, accessories, ornaments, toys, knick-knacks and so on. As well fashion, there will be live music, various urban art exhibitions and, of course, food!

Here are just some of the participants:

Hareburger – “Hare” as in Hare Krishna, not the big bunny. These guys specialise in soya-based hamburgers and feature in first edition of Gastronomia de Rua.

Café La Furgoneta – Amazing Italian style organic coffee and other organic treats including brownies and cookies.

Blitz Open Bar – Mmmm, lovely booze.

Acarajé da Ciça – Everyone’s favourite street snack from Bahia, Acarajé.

Amarena – Ice cream from the people who supply TT Burger. If it’s good enough for Thomas Troisgros, I think it’s good enough for the rest of us!

All in all it promises to be a really fun day out – great if you need to buy someone a present, or if you just feel like stuffing your face. See you there?

Entry to Babilônia Feira Hype costs R$10. The market runs from 14:00 to 22:00 this Saturday and Sunday (7-8 June). The venue is Clube Monte Líbano, in Leblon.

Yeah, I LOVE the markets here. To be fair, I love markets in general, but Rio has a good mix. Still waiting to make a trip north to Belo Horizonte – hopefully after the Copa :)
