This tour of Little Africa (Pequena África) tells a fascinating and criminally undertold story of Rio’s black history. The ‘Little Africa’ name reflects the history and continuing importance of descendents of the Africans brought to the area during times of slavery. Taking place in the historic neighbourhood of Saúde, you’ll visit sites such as the Valongo Wharf where millions of Africans arrived in the 1800s, and Pedra do Sal – to this day, a vibrant cultural hub, rich in street art (much of which depicts important black historical figures) and the site of regular samba street parties.

Although the subject matter is at times heavy, this is a really positive, fun and all round enjoyable way the spend a few hours, all buoyed up by wonderful guides who are passionate about the subject matter. One of the essential experiences of any trip to Rio.
